Interwoven Sock Ads

It's time for one of my favorite things in the world- J.C. Leyendecker's Interwoven Socks ads:

The goal is that if by some chance you are visiting this blog and do not have a sock garter and/or men's ankle fetish, you will hopefully by the end of this post.

I want to make it clear that my fascination with ankles is not as simple as thinking "ankles are appealing."

It's something very particular to men's fashion- the titillating effect of seeing ankles cannot be duplicated in modern women's fashion.

So much of men's fashion conceals the figure and gives the illusion of bulk. Very little skin is shown, and most of it loosely drapes over the figure.

It's all about bigger, stronger, straight lines, more angles, less curves. Even men's underwear isn't skin tight.

So when a man sits in the right way and, amidst all this concealment and bulkiness, he shows a sliver of sock-covered ankle... It's curvy, elegant, it's the thinnest, boniest part of the leg, and it's covered by perfectly skin tight cloth.

It's elegant, but creates such a sharp contrast that it's vulgar. It's very appealing.

I love Leyendecker's work, but man, these sock ads are something else. Why don't we have ads like this today?
And I love the first one, it should have a caption that says "You sorry bastards probably wish you had socks like mine, but sorry, you can't have."
And these images as whole need a caption that says "my ankles bring all the ladies/men to the yard"

My friend [info]immoralilly once did a class called "18th Century Movement", and wrong century, I know, I KNOW, but she told me that the reason men bowed in that very particular way where they had one pointy-toed foot pointing waaaay out in front was because the ANKLE and CALF was considered the super sexiest bit of a man, so when they bowed they were really saying 'hey ladies! check out my ANKLE you know you want to'.

so er it goes WAY back.

Nnnnnngh feet. Everything to do with feet and ankles. And hands and wrists. You know what else? Is the sexiest? And for the very same reasons you give for ankles? When anyone (but especially a man) is wearing gloves, the tiny, tiny, tiny sliver of exposed skin at or just above the wrist, if a sleeve should happen to slide just the right way. GUH.

Well, you've sold me on ankles, I'll add it to 'the small of the back' in my list of 'less obvious places I find hot on dudes'.

It's funny seeing the Rockwell at the bottom of all of these, since you can spot the different approach without too much difficulty--definitely not stylized the same way at all.

It's so weird that Rockwell's and Leyendecker's careers have so much overlap (ads for same companies, covers for same magazines) when their approaches are so... soooo different. Like, one is in the running for Most Wholesome Illustrator Ever. And... The other could make a chair look vaguely erotic if a male model wasn't on hand. (Luckily a model always WAS on hand or we'd all be making posts about chair fetishes...)

(Also, may I just say, that is a fabulously curated Flickr you've got there.)
